End of an era July 26, 2010

At the end of this week we will see the end of the Sparkly project. It has worked really well in transferring the experience of Gloucestershire College in mobile learning to our two partners, Royal Forest of Dean College and Stroud College.

They have found the process has started the change in culture that mobile learning can bring and an increase in the use of multimedia and mobile devices across the curriculum.

Hopefully they will be able to progress further next year even without additional funding.

I suspect we will continue to work together in the future.

BBC News reports on Facebook Zero

The world’s biggest social network has revealed details of a stripped-down, text-only version of its mobile site called Facebook Zero.

The low-bandwidth site is aimed at people viewing Facebook on their mobile and will launch “in the coming weeks”.

Facebook is very popular with learners and though various Apps have been released for the iPhone and Android, this version of the Facebook site will work on any mobile device that can access the internet.

Yesterday we ran our first MoLeNET Academy Event at Gloucestershire College.

It was on Mobile Learning for ITT and went very well.

We covered a lot of areas from devices and gadgets, to pedagogy, culture and next steps.

We are aiming to repeat the event in the summer.

I do like the idea of accessing the college VLE from a mobile device. It is possible on the iPhone to access the college VLE, but I would like to see a more iPhone’esque approach, in a similar manner to that of using Twitter or Facebook on the iPhone.

I noted a couple of links from Twitter (always a good source for links) specifically from MoodleDan.

These were MLE-Moodle and Moodbile.

Could be interesting and useful for our MoLeNET project.

Changing cultures November 12, 2009

Of the many things about the Sparkly project, one is about helping to change the culture at our partner colleges towards making it much easier for them to embed mobile learning.

One of the things we need to identify, what are the cultural aspects at Gloucestershire that have enabled us to enhance and enrich learning with mobile technologies.

What do we have that allows staff to be accommodating towards using mobile devices in their teaching, a willingness to experiment with mobile learning and supporting learning.

I have been discussing it with a variety of colleagues to see what they think.

What are the cultural barriers at your institution? What would stop the embedding of mobile learning at your institution?

Any new project requires a fair bit of paperwork, and Sparkly is no different. There are invoices to set and pay, memorandums of understanding to sign and write. Plans to finalise and get together. There’a a fair bit to do.

Tomorrow we have the first of our project meetings with various staff from RFDC,  Stroud and Gloucestershire. This will generate some more paperwork I bet.

After it was Glossy, it was Shiny, now it’s all Sparkly…

The Sparkly project through the experience and expertise gained by Gloucestershire College through the Glossy and Shiny MoLeNET projects will provide technical and pedagogical help and support for Royal Forest of Dean and Stroud Colleges in their transformative journey in the embedding of mobile learning and use of mobile technologies to support assessment, learning and teaching across a range of curriculum areas.

The Sparkly project builds on success of the Glossy and Shiny projects.

Sparkly will continue the transformation and embedding of mobile learning at Gloucestershire College, whilst sharing and collaborating with two partners, Royal Forest of Dean and Stroud in their transformative journey down the road of mobile learning.

Sparkly will fast track the two partner colleges in the strategic embedding of the use of mobile devices and technologies to enhance and enrich the learning process. Gloucestershire College will provide technical support, pedagogical guidance and training, whilst continuing to embed the use of mobile technologies across the curriculum.

I am off to London today for the Sparkly project for the first meeting of MoLeNET phase three. This won’t be anything new for me having done the same for the first two MoLeNET phases (actually if I remember I didn’t go to the first one, sending a colleague along as I was off work at the time).

It will be an opportunity to meet the other projects in this phase, talk a bit about what we are intending to do and see what is required of us by the LSN.

David, Gareth and Carol will be there and they should be soon posting to this blog their news, views and what is happening in their colleges.

First there was Glossy, then it went all Shiny and now it’s all Sparkly!

Gloucestershire College was successful in its proposal for phase 3 of MoLeNET. In a partnership project with Royal Forest of Dean and Stroud we hope to fast track and embed mobile learning into those two colleges.
